When Permitted to Wander, 2020 – 2021
Soft Estate (George Chinnery, Colette Griffin & Wingshan Smith)
11:40 minute video with audio

Following a series of online workshops comprised of open discussion, creation and reflection participants took to King Edward Park and their local green spaces, navigating the landscape using language, contouring and meditate walking practices. As they walked, they listened to a short piece of audio, a composition of sounds, words and fragments collected from ‘the great outdoors’ and poems made by participants. Each poem was assembled using text and pictorial documentation of the first county Asylum, sourced by researcher David Stewart.

When Permitted to Wander is an outcome of Layers and Spaces, a commission created during the Covid-19 pandemic, an audio / video piece made by Soft Estate in collaboration with Nicola Carter, Tom Gilbert, Hannaa Hamdache, Amy Sidebotham and Aisling Ward – participants from communities living or working in close proximity to King Edwards Park. The artwork presents our individual navigations of a particular space and a specific moment in time.
